So, you’re currently a student going about your everyday life – essays, projects, presentations and even dissertations. Whilst this may all seem like far too much for you to be juggling as well as balancing your social life (and potentially your working life), you’re constantly being told that to even get your foot in the door of the working world, you’re going to need experience. As much as you may think this is untrue, I cannot stress how important it really is to get this experience. Gaining placements & work experience allows you to apply theory to practice. It is a totally different environment to the regimental ways of mainstream/higher education, and not only are the skills invaluable, it’s great to be able to sit in on brainstorms and see how the people & the industry really work.

What I’m sure you guys want to know is how to go about getting yourself these placements. Well, it’s simple – be proactive. Don’t sit around expecting the opportunities to be thrown at you. This won’t happen. Here are my top five tips to helping you find/get that placement:

  • Source out companies & industry sectors you’d like to work in. Google them. If you want to work in fashion PR, then Google ‘Fashion PR work experience’. Guaranteed results will come up, and then go from there to find one that’s right for you.

  • Don’t apply to just one. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. If you apply to more, you have more chance of getting one.

  • Even if a company doesn’t explicitly say they have work experience opportunities, send them a polite & professional email to ask anyway. Even if they say no, at least you’re on their radar as a proactive, potential future employee.

  • Ensure your email, CV and cover letter are of a good standard. Poor grammar, bad formatting and general laziness will not be rewarded. Good communication skills are key in any job – make sure you make a good first impression.

  • Show your passion for the industry, let your employer that you want nothing more than to progress and develop, and you feel that gaining work experience with them will be incredibly beneficial for both them & you.

Once you get yourself that work experience or internship, make sure you work your butt off. Show your willingness to help and learn – if you don’t have a job to do or have finished your task(s), ask your supervisor if there is anything else you can help with. The employer/your supervisor will be watching you to evaluate whether you have potential as a future employee – wow them… make them want you.

Most of all, good luck & have fun!

Darby
